From the Sui dynasty through the height of the Tang, countless travelers crossed the desert to reach the Mogao Caves. Cave 130 preserves the scene in The Governor's Wife Worshipping the Buddha: a Tang noblewoman performing ritual with flowers and incense
We have taken the two ritual vessels from that painting and made them real, as vase-shaped incense tablets. Sealed inside each vase are the flowers and the herbal essence that travelled on the Silk Road thousands of years ago. Lighting the incense is like breaking the seal: the floral and medicinal warmth release all at once, and pale smoke drifts up like mist off a mountain, recreating the ambience of the Mogao ritual where flower and smoke once mingled.Light one vase, sit with it, and let the room become a small, peaceful space of your personal ritual.
